I am a newbie to the PSD side of things, so pardon my ignorant questions!

I currently own a 96 Chevy 6.5 Turbo Diesel K2500 HD (extended cab long bed). Need to move up to a crew cab (2 kids, and a wife - my 13 year old (younger of the two boys) wears a size 13 shoe...big kid) , and need more towing umph due to a recently bought new toyhauler trailer. Trailer weighs in at 8,000 ish empty, and I estimate 10,000 to 10,500 loaded with dirt bikes etc.

I am currently considering a variety of used Crew Cab trucks, generally a bit older trucks, ranging from say 96 to 2001. These include some of the older style ford diesels, some V-10 Ford gassers, and the 99+ Ford diesels.

Onto my questions:

- I am just now realizing there is a notable difference in the Ford Diesels prior to 99 vs the older style trucks (ie 97 ish). Clearly the newer trucks are more up to the task power wise, but would the older style have enough umph for my needs? If so, what tranny and axle ratio combos would do it?

- In the 99+ trucks, what tranny and axle combos will yeild adequeate towing capacity for 10,000 lbs plus?

- In either style engine, what are the major maintenance items to watch for in a "higher mile" truck? For example, I have learned with the Chevy 6.5, around 100 to 130,000 ish miles, you had better plan on new injectors. Are there similar "big ticket" items I need to plan for and anticipate need to replace (and cost of) in a used truck? Most of the trucks I am looking at seem to be between 120,000 and 175,000 miles. I did find the threads on things to look for in a used truck, but did not seem to come across anythign like this example of injectors I learned about the Chevy's.

- Can someone describe what the real differences are between the two engine layouts? (pre 99 vs post 99).

-Any particular drive train combos, years etc. to stay away from in the powerstrokes?

I guess that is enough pesky questions for now - I am sure more will come up as I continue to learn! Thanks in advance for the help!

my brother got his 99 about 3 years ago he just gave it to me, i just gave my 97 to the company we run a landscaping co. my 97 was the most trustworthy truck ive owned its about to rollover 200k and its pulled fifth wheel campers ie about 10000 my lawn trailer 5000 but allday long all week long the only thing ive changed is my water pump, some rubber lines and the oring on my fuel bowl drain, and i had a shift kit installed, and my front end needed a couple parts plus alignment. i hate to give it to my workers they tend to destroy trucks but we got a good deal on it and i have the 99 now.
on the 99 my brother bught it with 140k on it and drove it to 200 its been worked really hard its whole life and he put a chip on it so his list is more expensive he blew the turbo and tranny in one race. he has a rebuilt rearend not the ring and pinion just the seals and bearings, the water pump, radiator and thermostat, power steering pump, the front end/ bushings tierods and ball joints, thats really it for his.
Both are f250 2wd psd. just watch out for the ones worked really hard you can see the diff in my 97 to his 99 however both trucks have been great for the work we do how often do you pull your trailer

I'm about to tow 10,000# about 300 miles... I'm most concerned about blowing a tire out on the trailer haha.

yea he had just stated that he had a trailer about 10 k so i figured i could compare my brothers best friend uses his 350 dually to pull huge amounts of weight. hes gone over the limit a few times without warping springs or getting in an accident. these trucks are unstopable

A F-250 will tow all you will ever really need... OBS are great, had one... The SD are a little easyer to mod and get some big HP out of but there is no real differant in them.

OBS have smaller injectors, smaller turbo, mechanical fuel pumps, they dont have IC. But they dont have a dead headed fuel system, have forged rods, and can be built to preform every bit as good as a SD.
