since the weather has been getting cold here my motor started making a hissing noise at part throttle. if i give it more throttle or back out of it the hiss goes away. it's fairly loud and almost sounds like a external exhaust dump on a turbo gas motor.

just wondering if it's normal since the other 7.3's i've drove have never made this noise.

yes. its your exhaust back pressure valve doing its job. search ebpv in the search button, this feature will get you a ton of answers for every thing :sweet

x2 on both points.

The EBPV functions like a heat riser on a gas motor.. forces exhaust to stay in the engine longer and warms it up quicker.. and when it closes off, oh yeah, it sounds like a super-stock pulling tractor winding up..

You may need to clean the sensor tube. It runs from the passenger side exhaust manifold up to a sensor mounted on top of the HPOP reservoir. The tube gets plugged up with soot. You can replace the tube or clean it out with a stiff wire chucked up in a drill.

I used a piece of weedeater string attached to a drill and a can of brake cleaner...worked like a charm
