Check Engine Light (diesel)

My truck has 160,000 miles. I bought it new. I haven't put any power upgrades on it. I change my fuel filters and air filter regularly. Lately I have noticed if I am driving with the vehicle warm: hit the pedal gradually or hit it hard to pass someone the Service Engine light comes on. Then eventually it turns off. I am wondering if my engine isn't getting enough fuel or air flow. Any ideas. I replaced the fuel pump recently.

Every time that check engine soon light comes on , it sets a code in the ecm. You need to get a code reader to read the codes. Once you know what particular component the ecm is finding a fault with, you can then figure out what steps to take to diagnose the problem. These ford diesels require a special code reader, must bea able to communicate with the ecm, not all "gas" code readers will work. Ford dealer is a sure thing, but can be expensive. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Talked to a Ford Tech he was telling me to bring it in when the light is on by the time I get to the dealer the light is off. He says it needs to be on because the ecm recodes and the light goes off. Maybe the Cam Sensor? It is leaking oil maybe causing issues. Replacing it tomorrow.

never heard of a CPS leaking oil, but I guess anything is possible as they do have an O-ring on them...

usually when the CEL comes on under load, it's a fuel supply or high pressure oil supply issue.

Even with the CEL off, there should still be a history code stored in the PCM.

An "on-demand" or KOEO (Key On Engine Off) code would be nice because it tells you what's going on "right now" but it's not the end of the earth if there's not one...
