Three inches of snow
Lasted until afternoon, then melted away.
Closed the town down.
Many cars slid off road.
Had not had such a storm in 25 years.
Possible snow this weekend.
That would make it two years in a row.
Temperatures could drop to low + 30's
And they say that we have global warming...

How deep does your snow get?

we commonly have up to two or three feet on the ground at any one point during the winter...

most of the time, around a foot to 18 inches...

they close schools if it's A. Wind chill -10deg or colder (lots of poor and some just plain stOoPid kids don't wear coats) B. snowfall is sufficient to cause dangerous conditions on MAIN roads, C. drifting completely blocks secondary roads.

The Superintendent and Transportation Supervisor drive around at about 5AM and evaluate conditions; if warranted, schools are closed by 6:30am.

If a storm hits during the day, the county notifies the school districts two hours before they anticipate plows being pulled from secondary roads to concentrate on main roads. Schools are closed one hour before this point.

Three inches of snow is considered a "light dusting" and nowhere near enough to close schools around here...

Some of the funniest scenes of driving "skill" I have ever witnessed have been when a load of snow was dumped on Metro Atlanta. When I lived there in 1982 they had a storm that closed down the city for five days. Nothing funnier than watching Southerners try to drive in the white stuff.

I did okay, but I had four years of driving experience in New England.

We usually don't get more than 12-18" at a time here in Denver, although I'm 1,000' ft higher than Denver so we get a little more than them. Most I've ever seen out here was 42" back in March of 03.
