My husband has his 2000 7.3 350 diesel(named PONGO). He stopped driving it daily because he was fortunate enough to get a work truck. When we were getting ready to pull out our toy hauler in July to head to Sand Mountain, he fired up his beloved and the engine blew. We put in a new engine and ever since we have been having the issue with the CPS. I believe within the last 2months we have changed it roughly 4-5 times. It dies just over 100 miles. The truck is chipped and has many more amenities. So, what could be triggering this to happen so often? If you could think of anything to try we will. Thank you very much for your time!

Have you inspected the "old" CPS's for physical damage? Earlier trucks (94-96) had a shim kit to keep the camshaft gear from striking the CPS. Its possible your new engine block is from an earlier truck?

Have you tried a "broken" CPS in another truck? Perhaps its not the CPS, but a wiring problem farther along the wires? Maybe its been scuffed, or scraped.

How about the connector? have the pins been bent? flared open? corrosion inside?

CPS

After I replaced the engine in the truck I have been having a problem with the CPS shorting out. It seems to "pop" the CPS at about every 50 to 200 miles. I put a new one in and the truck fires right up and runs fine. I have rewired the sensor back to the computer, also replaced the computer of the truck and nothing seems to work. It seems that something is spiking the sensor to make it short out. I have tested the sensor after it pops and there is no continuity thru it anymore.

The CPS sensor is a Hall Effect sensor designed to pick up small cutouts from a timing wheel bolted to the front of the camshaft.

It should have 3 wires going to it. Ground, Power, and Signal Return.

I hate to send you to "The other site", but this page gives a DETAILED explanation of the CPS circuit.

If you had a scanning tool like the "AutoEnginuity", you could plug into your truck and monitor the actual output of the various sensors and see if there is a voltage spike that is popping the CPS, or if your getting camshaft contact with the sensor.

Did you return the truck to stock programming via the SC Tuner? When you mentioned "chip" I was assuming one of those extreme all time smokin ones:D
