Ok guys, I need some input on a brake problem. On my way home tonight I had to get on the brakes hard and quick and nothing happened! I managed to avoid the car in front of me but the truck just wouldn't stop, she did slow down but not fast at all. The brake pedal was hard and I smelled the brakes after I slowed. I have checked them again after this and they stopped fine. What is the culprit? This isn't the first time for this and I have bled the brakes before as well as replaced the rotors all the way around, front calipers and pads all the way around. HELP!

Thanks guys. She went straight as an arrow. I have tried to duplicate it and have been unable to. I was empty when this happened and I was running around 60 mph. After trying to stop I smelled the brakes just like they were overheated. Could this have been my problem? If so do I need some better pads as I am not running the best.

well, kind of.

1. The grade of pad you use will definately have an effect on your stopping power.

2. the conditions you described should NOT have had an effect on the temperature of the pads.

3. you should be able to duplicate the symptoms; good, bad or otherwise.

can you easily spin all four of your wheels with the truck off the ground?
do the brakes smell even after normal driving?
are any of the wheels coated with brake dust?
are you running oversize tires?
do you drink regular, or light beer?

Information. We want Information

You said they "smelled" hot. Did you do alot of stop-n-go driving? Or was this out of the blue? If not stop-n-go driving, you might want to check the booster for the brakes. Mine is controlled off the power steering pump which yours should be, too, check all your fluids.

Scott, you say you live in East TN. There is a lot of hills in East TN, had you been doing a lot of stop and go driving in the hills and gotten them hot before you made this stop?
