bio diesel?

im not sure how it works and i kind of want to know a little about and if it is really worth it to make and all that and if any of you out there have had good luck with it

everyone here that has posted on teh subject has had good results using bio. I buy it anytime I can even when the price is higher. I like how my engine runs and the reduced pollution and stink is just a bonus. There are several here that make their own and a lot of us that dont. Setup and time are usually the reasons some of us dont make it. I think that overall, yes it is worth it.

do you know of any retailers in Vegas? You can find a mostly accurate map on www.biodiesel.org

awesome thanks ill look into it. does it improve your mpg at all and does it affect your power at all?

not that I have noticed. I have heard people claim a minimal loss of mileage but I have not kept a close watch on mine to be certain. No power loss at all that I can tell. If there is, you would need a computer to detect it.

45K? Not many miles on your truck! Pretty cool.

Neat biodiesel [B100] has a BTU content of 121,000 BTU per gallon, compared to the average for No. 2 diesel fuel of 131,000 and 126,000 BTU per gallon for No. 1 diesel. It contains 11 percent oxygen by weight, which accounts for its slightly lower heating value, less than 15 ppm sulfur and no nitrogen or aromatics. This results in a fuel that burns more cleanly than petroleum, with characteristically low carbon monoxide, particulate soot and hydrocarbon emissions.

Fuel economy, power and torque are proportional to the BTU content of the biodiesel or biodiesel-blend fuel. For example, B20 tends to reduce power, torque and fuel economy by slightly less than 2 percent.

So B100 has 7.7% less BTUs than #2.

When I was in Vegas for a trade show back in June I tried to get B100 from Haycock Petroleum on Bonanza. :rolleyes: They only sell B20 retail and it's on a proprietary card setup.


I drove from Amarillo to Vegas and back to Kingman on B100, then got about 60 gallons of #2 for the rest of the trip on about B50 blend. I averaged 14.9mpg towing about 5000lbs anywhere from 75-80mph, except where grades obviously wouldn't let me coming out of Kingman. On those grades I sustained about 1200 degree egts so you can't really say I was babying it then either.:roflmao


If I lost any mileage it wasn't much. I towed the same trailer and cargo to Orlando, FL last year and averaged 14.1 for the entire trip on #2. I did do the fuel system between the two trips though. In town I have noticed a small drop in MPG between #2 and B100 but nothing major.
