Hey guys,
Just found this forum- on the other ones. I'm looking to do my next round of upgrades soon after i get my BTS trans done as hes 2 hours away from me...

Ive searched, and dont really see any talk of the ball buster turbo. Anyone running one? I found it on AMJ performance, kinda curious on it. Ill be running 530 hybrids from swamps with their big fuel system. They have the sledghammer turbo, but a little too much $ for me to spend...:thanks

There was some chatter about the named turbocharger in the community a few months back I'll have to dig it up.

I believe Ball Buster was another name or nickname for the true manufacturer which was phat turbo or something, that'll take some digging.

If faced with the choice of a turbo upgrade I'd have to lean to the GTP-38R based on that it's well known and has a pretty good performance record from owners.:sweet

We are also lining up our 4R100 transmission to be bullet proofed by Brian at BTS soon.

Welcome to the community too!!!:thumbs

Yea i think I was reading the same thread which was about 10 pages long earlier... Unfortunately, the thread was somewhat biased for the vendors each trying to sell their products.

Ball Buster is one of several names to describe pretty much the same thing from various vendors. It is supposedly a lower cost option to the ball bearing turbo. I've heard that ball bearing turbos are really pricey to rebuild. The Ball Buster, Big Dog, Fat Shaft etc, use a more conventional bearing section. So it costs less to rebuild and costs less initally. But from most everything I've seen or heard, it performs about the same as the ball bearing item except maybe for slightly slower spool-up.

Either one won't fit an early 99 unless the up-pipes & Y-connector, turbo pedestal, intake plenum and intake covers are all changed to the 99.5 and later standard. Those costs add up quickly. That's why Bean's Dominator 66 is so popular, it'll bolt right into an early 99 without changing all that stuff out. But the problem is trying to get one. I tried for over 3 weeks and had to settle for rebuilding my old one.

Thanks for the response! I may have found my cheaper turbo for later.

Whats everyones thoughts... BTS valve body be enough for a little while even with this turbo, or am I looking for trouble?

Turbonetics has a BB drop in coming in a few weeks, will finally kill the GTP-38r. I call the GTP-38r the Special Surging Oil Leaker... or SSOL for short...

It leaks oil, it surges, and it can NOT be rebuilt for less then $800...

That being said, I would go for a H2e if your looking at 530 injectors... No drop in will live that long with 530's pushing it...

Thanks again as usual for the good input! I was looking at waiting for the drop in BB from TN, however Swamp's told me the same thing; 530 is too big an injector for a drop in unit. Im going to go a route I havent seen anyone else use yet, and get the sludgehammer from Swamps with the hybrids, and having them throw headstuds on at the same time. They are expensive bastards, however dont want to crap out a good motor. If I can make 525hp/1000 tq (or close to) ill be happy.
