Anyone ever hear of this GPR problem?

I just replaced glow plug relay. The new one was the MR99 from autozone. It was marked "S" and "I" on the small terminals. I originally I hooked up the "I" to the "12-volt when key on" source and the relay didn't work at all. Then I realized that it might be a negative and I swapped the small terminals. Now the "S" is going to the "12-volt when key on". The relay engages when I turn the key is on, but will not disengage. I let the truck sit for about 5 minutes (it's 70 degrees outside) and the gpr was engaged the whole time. I then started the truck and drove it for about 5-7 minutes and it was still engaged (had 12 volts to both heavy terminals and one small terminal). I turned the key off and it stayed engaged. I had to disconnect the battery to disengaged the relay. After more troubleshooting, I left the aft small terminal off and the relay turned on and off with the key, but it would not shut-off with the key on (Five minutes after I turned the key on, the GPR was still engaged). It seems like some timer or something is not shutting off the signal so the GPR will disengage. The old GPR is destroyed so I can't retry it. Any advice?

sounds if you have 12V to the small contacts then you are going to have the relay engaged and have 12V to both of the large lugs.

when you disconnect the small wire that is giving you +12V does it continue to have 12V or is it back feeding through the relay?

I would suggest taking it back and saying that it stays stuck on and try your luck with a different one off the shelf.

Also.. I'd get the FORD/IH part # and have it in hand when you deal with Auto-Zone.

IIRC, there are 2 GPR's, one is isolated when mounted, one is not.

First make sure you have the right relay. That rely takes alot of abuse the Ford or better yet the international ones are the same at a cheaper price. both small termanals need to be hooked up for it to work. It does not acheave it's ground from it's mounting base

I just ordered one of these today for mine, 586-902 I am tired of having to get a new relay every 6 months to a year. I am hoping this one takes care of the problems and can handle things. It seems heavy duty and have read other sites where people have used it, they say it is a tight fit, but does fit. I will find out when mine gets here.

Yep Ron, Mouser is where I ordered mine. I got an e-mail just a while ago saying that it shipped today. I can't wait. Mine is DOA now so it will be put on as soon as it gets here.
