It keeps air from going under the truck, increasing mileage. The air dam diverts the air along the sides of the truck which is easier than going under the truck. With a 4 X 4 I don't really see any benefit. Remove it and see how it looks.

Buddy of mine with a dodge paid to put one on his 4x4 about 5 or 6 years back. I dunno what's right but if you're driving these to save fuel, uh...maybe that is an issue to re-evaluate. I think they look better w/o the silly thing.
