but, what do I lose by doing it? I see the air restriction problem, so I am guessing I lose Heat going into the engine???

The only thing you lose will be restriction in the intake system. Although I live right now in what some Texass wimps would consider a "cold" climate (it's actually quite mild right now), I plan on yanking my AIH as soon as I can find the proper plug. For the AIH to activate, IIRC, the PCM has to sense a number of specific conditions including: running at low idle, ambient air temperature below 32*F, glow plugs off, oil temp above XXX*F (I can't remember that figure), parking brake on or tranny in "Park", and one other condition I can't remember. If I ever left my truck running at low idle for longer than the amount of time needed to cool off before shutdown, I would keep the AIH but I don't do that and so the AIH is going bye-bye. In the winter, my PSD is either at high idle or turned off (running at low idle to cool the turbo doesn't count) so the PCM in my truck will never see the conditions necessary for the AIH to activate.

Yep, if you stay with dino fluid, if you change to synthetic, then you will need a lot more than that. Bryan

Call me hillbilly but I just wacked the end of the AIH off. With all the above said requirements the AIH need to be turned on seems like a waste for FORD to even install such a contraption. If you decide to saw it off be prepared, that thing is TOUGH doing it with a hacksaw, probably alot easier with a dotco.

There are so many requirements that basically, it is easier to say, as long as you do not leave your truck idling in park with the e-brake on for long periods in sub-freezing weather, it will never turn on.

To answer why Ford put it in the truck, it was for emissions reasons. People leaving their trucks idling for long periods without one of these would be dumping mass quantities of raw hydrocarbons intot he air. If you do not do so (it sure isn't recommended, that is for sure...) then you do not need the AIH. It will never even turn on.
