i've been thinkin bout changing out my gen II k&n airfilter to something newer.

its claims to increase HP around 15 or so, i have noticed that the AFE stage 2 claims to increase around 50, and even the volant system claims 40.

does anybody that has these systems believe that to be true ?

feedback would be appreciated.

Those figures I'd be a little skepticle about. Numbers around 20 are a little more realistic. Better figures will be achieved with whatever you do to get away from the factory style intake with the flat rectangular filter element. Open element styles work good. The Ford AIS works good also.

The AIS with the foam fender sleeve is what I stuck with after trying a Tymar.
I found that the Tymar, which intakes underhood warmed air, caused things to run at a hotter temp than the AIS with a ZooDad mod did. Operating temps were an issue with me because I towed so much in all types of weather, cold or hot. The AIS, foam fender well sleeve & Zoodad mod allowed things to run significantly cooler as evidenced by less cycling of the cooling fan clutch.

If most of your driving is non-towing, I'm sure an open element style will work great for you.

This past May when I had just bought my 2000 PSD, there were several guys and trucks from AFE at Off Road Warehouse in San Diego for a series of races and they made the same claim. But they said, the trucks had their 4 inch SS exhaust, larger injectors and was chipped (forget which one). They were pretty honest about the power saying that just putting the intake system on would make a few HP difference but if you had done the other mods first, the the 50HP or whatever would show up? They were truck guys, obviously NOT management! I have the stage 2 intake and it is a tad noisy but I tell the wife "that's the sound of power"!

thats very interesting john, as you can see in my sig, i have improved the IC, boost tubes and exhuast.

the K&N has been good, but the filter is started to show damage from being takin out several times to work on stuff, this stuff in the pic has come loose and is no longer attached. just time to make a change soon.

I love my AFE II and wouldn't trade it for anyother. Gitty up and go? It's got it! Easy to install and just plain looks awsome being so big, I need to get the sock for it though (getting bugs and such). As far as the sound. If you love the whine of the turbo and whooosh of air created by letting out of it and or changing gears then go for it. Check around and get the best prices. EBAY will have some, I got the PRO GUARD 7 filter with mine, just a little more. You can probly talk some down to a reasonable price. If you call just less than 400 reasonalbe.

I don't believe it w/o the mods for exhaust and tuning. My rig is stock except the intake aFE S2 PG7. I like it, it does make a difference, and it sound cool too. But 50 hp? If you go to the aFE site (http://www.afefilters.com/5410192.asp) they really do claim "max" 50HP gain.

Reminds me of the speed mod claims on airplanes. Each one adds 10% or 25% or whatever to speed at given rpm. But they don't add together (seen any Cessna windmillers close to Mach 1?)

Incidentally, the PG7 barely fits under my hood. It compresses the hood insulation a tad so it is not getting full benefit of all that filter area. I wonder if the PG7 ver is worth the extra money given this constriction.
