I've read of people using a acetone to strip the paint off the emblems< anyone done it? can it be done on the truck? or is it easier to just buy new chrome ones?

paint will come off pretty easy

use a good quality painters tape, you can get it at an automotive paint store, dont use the cheap 30 cent masking tape.

then clean the surface real good around the emblems and the lower fender

then WAX real good around em

then tape off real close and add a layer of newspaper around the outer tape edge
then get a small container of acetone and a few cotton swabs
dip them just enough to wet and then rub out the paint.

followed by a good wiping with a clean cotton or flannel cloth to buff to a high sheen
then remove all the tape and paper and rinse the whole are with clean water
and dry.
Viola you got shiny badges

speed is your enemy.
