Workin on the gf's early 99 F250 4x4 5.4. The speedo dont work, abs light is on, shifts very hard and brake dummy light is on. I did some searching on here and I think the speed sensor is bad on the rear end. Does the speed sensor work with the abs system and trans shifting hard or do I need to look for another prob. I need to check the brakes. I know it squeals bad. Does the brake light come on when it senses brake pads gettin worn out? This thing has over 226k on it. Been driven pretty hard but still runs like a top. Im goin through it real well since she just bought it from her dad. So far i've found LOTS of stuff haha. Poor truck!

You have a bad speed sensor. This helps the ABS system figure out if you are skidding, and helps the tranny in the shifting. No sensor tells you that your brakes are squealing, your ears do. The squealing tells you that you need new pads, now! Have fun, doesn't look like too much trouble. Hope it is warming up in Ks.

Yea i know the pads are bad. Does the brake dummy light being on mean its got another prob other than pads bein bad? I assume there are sensors on the master cylinder or booster? She bought pads today and we already have the speed sensor. I assume its the sensor on the rear end?

The SS is on top of the rear end (pumpkin) with two wires going to it. I am not sure what is with the brake light, it might have to do with the balance of the rear brakes to the front brakes. There is a sensor that monitors the balance of brake pressures.

If the brakes are worn out, it may just be fluid displaced from the master cylinder to the calipers has left the reservoir low, and triggered the light.

Thanks for the input guys. Yea I replaced the sensor on top of the pumpkin and that fixed the trans shift probs and the speedometer now works. So far so good. Still got more to replace. Needs all new ball joints, sway bar bushings and end links, new brakes too. Yea I bet yer right JL on the worn out brakes. I did replace the front left pads so far. Didnt have time to do the rest. I had to replace the front left axle seal but noticed there is another prob. The reason why this seal keeps goin bad is the wheel hub is missing a bushing or its just worn that bad. This axle seal cant be the only thing supporting the axle shaft. I assume you cant replace this bushing separate without buying a whole new hub assembly?
