Hey guys, im a newbie on here so any help would be great!! this is about my 1997 F-250 crew cab shortbox. it has as of now, a donaldson air intake, full straight pipe 4inch exhaust, the edge evolution, and ATS parts- gauges, torque conv. and input shaft........ here is the deal.... About two months ago my powersrtoke started shifting funny, driving down the road doing 55 it seemed as the trans was not shifting into overdrive, the torque converter was slipping, and not allowing it to shift up. so im thinking, oh well, time to build the tranny, gonna need to do it sometime, now this just gives me a reason to do so. the thing was it was intermittent, it didnt do this all the time, one day it would be shifting fine, the next it would be shifting like the t/c was messed up, tranny temps would sky rocket and so on. then while this was happening all of a sudden my left turn signal doesnt work, comes on, just doesnt blink. well then all of my gages went out. so i replaced a bunch of fuses, thought i fixed the problem. well i keep driving for a few days, now all my gauges, running lights are off, tail lights and all, only my headlights work. and when i hit the brake, all my lights come on, let off the brake, they go off......now im confused.

I start buying parts to fix everything, so i can do it all at the same time. so here's where im at, i had my tranny rebuilt at the local tranny guys shop, i took it out at my friends shop, and we put it back in there, all certified mechanics too. put ATS t/c in and ATS billet input shaft in the tranny at this time. also replaced the exhaust back pressure sensor. also replaced multi-function switch/lever at the same time, thinking that was the issue. got it all back together, my lights didnt work right, so we ran through all the fuses again replaced some, replaced the turn signal relays, checked that all over, then they work just fine. so its all back together and everything was working just fine, tranny shifts like a banshee (had him build it up for power to come in the future) anyways, so im thinking im in the clear, and everything is working fine. nope, my exhaust valve on my turbo, the stupid butterfly valve, is opening and closing while im driving for no reason, and it wont stop, im at operating temp and all, so i just unplug it to keep the valve open and for some reason didnt throw a code, kinda surprised.
so now im thinking all is fixed.... well im driving down the road tonight after work, a day after i think i fixed everything, and i notice my left turn signal is on, but not flashing, just like what had first happened to me when all this started! then all of a sudden i get up to 55 and my tranny is doing the same thing it was doing before! the same reason why i had it rebuilt! so im thinking what in the heck is wrong with this pile?! i get home, put it in park, test out my turn signals, and they both work all of a sudden now! so then just on a hunch i get to thinking, i wonder if my tranny will shift normal now. i go out and test it, yep, the tranny shifts like its brand new! so as of right now, i am baffled, as are all of my friends who are mechanics. obviously im thinking as it must have to be something electrical, possibly the entire computer, or broken ground wire. cause its not throwing codes at all either. so........is there anybody out there that i havent confused entirely, or bored, or put to sleep for that matter who has any idea of whats wrong, or can help me out?:dunno

sounds to me like you have a chassis ground problem

anybody have a scanner that can test the GEM? Your run-of-the-mill Global OBD II scanners won't catch any codes on these engines, as they are "manufacturer specific" rather than generic

it just came to me... pull the taillights out of the sockets (or disconnect that part of the harness) and see if it still acts up

well i have already checked all of my lights, i had seen/heard about something like that happening, and to try out all my lights, all are good. it might take me some time to be able to get to hook it up to the scan tool at my friends shop, but im definately going to try and hook it up to one soon. and another thing, i happened to be leaving work, i started up my truck, let it warm up for bout ten minutes, and before i even moved, i tested my left turn signal to see if it was still working.....nope, same thing it was doing the night before, so i check all my lights. well i finally turned my lights all the way off, and turned them back on. tested my turn signal again, and it worked just fine after that!!! so that got me into thinking that my whole dimmer/headlight switch assembly in the dash is shorting out from time to time and causing all of this wierd stuff to happen. am i crazy for thinking that?? i thought it couldve been causing me issues before cause sometimes the gauges on my a-pillar are wired into that, and they would turn on and off sometimes for no reason, just the lights in them. so now im thinking that there is some seriously bad connection, causing a short in my system cause it all goes to the fuse panel from there, and that would make sense why other stuff was shorting out and blowing fuses for no reason. so does anybody else think this is a possibility that this could be all that is wrong??? and that maybe i didnt need to spend a bunch of money building my tranny?! anyways, im gonna try replacing that dimmer switch, and re-check all of the wiring on my stuff over there, and maybe get rid of my digital morpher to make all my gauges the same color since the ones ATS sent me werent all the same color when plugged in!

ok, so i replaced my headlight/dimmer switch assembly, also, i took out my stupid digital morpher that makes all my gages the same color. i checked all the wiring, put it all back together and everything worked fine and dandy.........for a day!!!! it all just repeats itself, left turn signal stops working properly, and the transmission just keeps shifting in and out of any gear now. im stumped, and getting ever so close to breaking down, and saying screw it, im buying a 6.4........but thats a little spendy. anyways, again, does anybody have any idea what the crap is wrong with my truck? and thankyou very much all of you who gave it some thought and replied and tried to help. sadly your good ideas were not the case of fixing mine...... please help, i have to resort to driving a car!

i finally figured it out, my line of fire (white lightning) light bar on the back of my truck from recon lighting. well, the thing shorted out, and blew up my wiring harness back there, the lights still worked, but thats what was causing everything to malfunction. just if anybody wants to know. and it was all tied into my rear lights, so when it was said check the rear brake lights for a filament that had been touching sorta deal, it holds truth very well...well my case was my led light bar had shorted out, lucky it didnt catch on fire, my friend wasnt as lucky with his line of fire, his did actually start on fire. anyways thankyou guys very much for the help!:notworthy the stroker is back in action, and pullin the sleds around:)
