4x4 grinds???

I just got my truck from f100cleveland and was drivin down the road about 20mph and tried to put it in 4x4, hubs are in auto and it has the electronic switch on the dash so i switched it over, it ground, quit, then ground again and dropped in. Once its in i can take it out and put it in and it goes fine unless i stop, then it does it again. If i stop and put it in 4x4 it's just fine, and it works fine. But isn't it supposed to be shift on the fly??? Any ideas what could be wrong? Sounds like its comming from the transfer case.

are you trying to put it in 4 high or 4 low? you should be able to put it in 4 high while moving, but you must stop and put it in neutral to go to 4 low

No 4 high it'll go, but it'll grind twice first and that can't be good. Its fine if i stop and put it in though, just got back from pullin a guy out of a ditch. My first pull with the new truck haha. Only had it 2 days. Love it!!!
