I have an early 99 F350, and the 4 wheel drive isn't engaging when the transfer case is moved to the 4 hi position. The 4x4 light comes on, but I'm assuming that is just a switch from the lever? Is this just a simple actuator problem, or is more involved. Anyone have a link to the wiring diagram for the 4x4 system? Thanks a bunch!

If you have the ESOF you are probably looking for a vacuum leak(The transfer case is operated electically, hubs via vacuum). Check the hoses that go to the hubs. They dry rot and crack causing a loss of vacuum. If you have never replaced them it probably wouldn't hurt to go ahead and do so. You may also have a bad oring in the hub. Take the hub off, clean and inspect it. Ford sells a rebuild kit that includes the oring.

If you have a vacuum leak you will probably notice a hissing noise coming from the hvac vent blend door. Ie-occassionally air only comes out of the defrost vents.

Hope this helps.

Do you have the hubs locked (if you have the manually-locking hubs, if you've got auto hubs, disregard this)?

I do not think that they ever put auto hubs in conjunction with a manual lever shifter on the T-case controls (which is what it sounds like you have, since you used the word lever, not knob or switch). That said, this pretty much eliminates the option of it being a vacuum issue, since vacuum only effects auto hubs.

The manual lever is just that, an actual mechanical link to the T-case shifting linkage, so if you pull the lever, and the light comes on, I'll bet dollars to donuts that the front driveshaft and axles are spinning. However, your truck does not have automatic hubs, they are manual. You must get out of the truck, and manually engage each hub (one on each side) by turning the selector on the end of the hub Clockwise until it clicks or stops turning. Once you are finished using 4x4, it is best to unlock them as soon as it is convenient (and safe) by turning the selector back counterclockwise until it stops.

Tbar's post is helpful if you do, indeed have ESOF (electronic shift on the fly) 4x4. You can tell by whether your 4x4 engages using a selector knob or switch on the dash (ESOF), or whether it has a floor-shift or lever (Manual). However, it sounds to me like you have the latter (since you used the word lever). If this is the case, the hubs are not vacuum actuated, as stated earlier, so none of this will help. I just want to save you from looking for vacuum hoses that are not there. If you do have ESOF, then Tbar's post is most likely going to help you find the root of your issue..

If you hear a buzzing noise/feel a buzzing through the lever when you try to engage 4WD w/o the hubs locked, that could be why you're not getting into 4WD. That's what my truck does when I try to engage 4WD w/o locking at least one hub so maybe that's what's going on...:dunno

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I have the manual locking hubs. I never would have guessed that on a 99 truck. My brothers Chevy has a transfer case lever on the floor and it will engage 4WD by just pulling it, I just figured that mine was the same. I just picked up the truck today, so I'm just trying to figure out everything.

Where is your 4x4 selector............on the dash or on the floor???
