The new 4.4-liter V8 diesel engine that is coming out in the 2010 model F150 is suppose to get 20% better fuel economy than the 5.4 gas engine. With the high cost of Diesel I am wondering if Ford needs to step it up a little. I can tell you that the 5.4 in our F150 is a gas hog so 20% would not be much. With Diesel so much more than gas would a 20% improvement in fuel economy help anything as far as cost per mile?

2010 F150 link.

It's a wash here.

87 Octane = $3.80
Diesel = $4.50

3.80 + 20% = $4.56 gallon

Let's say the 5.4 in a F150 gets 20 on the highway

The diesel would have to knock down 24 which is probably about right.

Facotr in the cost of the diesel upgrade and you're losing $$$. More when you count the added oil change expense etc.

WE'RE worried about fuel economy
THEY'RE worried about emissions, and the Feds measure it in grams/mile so a diesel engine makes sense to THEM

I sometimes wonder if the morons in government who are forcing these emissions standards down our throats have ever considered the concept of reduced emissions through increased fuel economy?

If they want diesels to get 30% fewer emissions, why not build a motor that will achieve 30% better fuel economy. As it is, they are achieving better emmisions with DPF's and so on, but at what cost? How much lousier fuel economy does the 6.4 get than the 6.0 or 7.3? The result being we are nationally using more fuel to feed our "cleaner" diesels.

:lmao:lmao 20 mpg is a dream.

Our 5.4 F-150 gets 11 mpg winter and a little under 14 mpg in the summer.

X2. And has no towing capability. And no re-sale value. I honestly believe my wife had to have it because it was blue and has FX4 stickers. Total POS.

Dang My dad's '01 supercrew 4X4 pulls down 15-17 under normal driving around here Drops to single digits when you put a toy trailer or a healthy load in the bed.

A buddy of mine has a 2000 7.3 that is a four door dually with a construction bed on it. He gets 10mpg no matter what. We took off the bed (some 3500 lbs), removed the muffler, added a programmer (Hypertech) and now he can get 16+ mpg. Weight is a real mileage killer.

yeah weight really knocks down the mpg on the 5.4 too, when I hook the boat to it the mpg drops close to 5mpg. I wonder if the 4.4 Diesel will be effected as much by weight. I still don't think 20% empty will be enough to sell them but if they can pull a load without dropping into the single digits it might help.
