    The only special tool you will need to break down a tranny is a slide hammer. You will need it to pull the pump. Screwdrivers will pop the snap rings. To put it back together you will need more special tools.

    Rebuilding a tranny isn't that hard. Most failures after a rebuild are from not installing the parts correctly. Other failures come from debris, poor quality or out of tolerance parts. Best thing to do is pick up a copy of the ATSG manual. Read it thoroughly. This will help in rebuilding...
