squeaky steering column

ok, my steering wheel has had a very annoying squeak for a couple of years now. I followed the discussion from that other site that described pulling the steering wheel and cleaning/greasing the copper rings and pins. I greased the daylights out of them but I still have a slight squeak every now and then. It is greatly reduced but still not gone. I am certain of the origin so it isnt the firewall boot or anywhere else. Has anyone had this squeak and successfully cured it?

how are the bearings in the upper part of the column?wiggly wheel?when the bearings are on thier way out the plastic cover on the wheel will rub on the plastic cover of the column and squeek.

interesting. I've never paid any attention to whether the wheel wiggles or not. Do you mean just grab and wiggle around? Up and down or side to side sort of wiggling? I'll check it this evening on the way home. Thanks for the suggestion. In that event, how hard are they to replace or can they be repacked?

just grab the wheel and try to sshake it like you would shake a wheel to check the wheel bearings.

nope, no wiggling. I tried pretty hard and no movement. I heard the squeak on the way home and it seems to be pretty far into a turn or coming back.

what else can I try?

there is another bearing at the end of the column.also check to see if the plastic cover on the wheel is rubbing on the cover for the column.you might also want to remove the multi-function(blinker) switch and lube the piece that rubs on the column to turn the blinkers off.

I have the same thing starting up, only mine gives out a little moan when you get almost to the lock on each side. I was thinking if it were bearings it would make the noise everythime you moved the steering wheel?

ok, this is back with a vengeance. Squeak minimized for about a week or so after I greased the pins behind the steering wheel but now it is at least as bad as it was. I assume the grease has all been scraped off by the pins.

Just to eliminate any other contributing factor, how do I get to the various bearings mentioned? I took the wheel off again and did not see anything. I also do not think it is the plastic.

I guess I need the following:

- how do I get to all the bearings?

- can they be greased or do they have to be replaced?

- if replaced, how?
