Tranny shot?

I'll make this as short as possible...

99 F-350 7.3. 248k.
I purchased the vehicle with 92k in 2003.

I have had very few problems with the truck. Nothing catastrophic, just routine things that you can expect from a truck as it ages. It has been a stellar truck for me.

Recently the truck just quit. Towed it to the dealership and had the PCM and fuel Heater assembly parts installed and it ran great. There was an o/d light flashing that turned out to be solenoid body and trans harness. Service advisor said that I could use it on my hunting trip and fix it when I got back.

So I am 30 miles in on the trip and the truck will not move. Engine runs but not action. I hop out and the trans is boiling oil onto the ground. I have it towed to the dealership again...

Service tech says by the looks of things from the outside that it's fried on the inside. Very hot smelling. The clutches on the inside are likely gone.

SO here is my question???
Do I have him replace the parts that I knew needed to be replaced and see if it works, or do I just have a reman installed, as it has been this long anyway and based on the likelihood of it being fried anyway.

I should add that I used this truck for my construction business for years towing a tool trailer etc.
For the last few years it has been mainly used for hunting, trips across the pass, runs to the dump, etc.
It is not critical that I have the truck, but I just put new tires on it and have spent almost 3k on it recently and would hate to get rid of it at any rate.

It is toast. Boiling tranny fluid is never a good thing. It may run for a few miles if all you change is the clutches, but you have a lot of burned junk floating around the tranny that will cause very big valve problems. Get a rebuilt tranny and be done with it.

You sound as convincing as the Service tech.

Should I just get a reman from the dealer or look around for a better deal?

Well, I am not a service tech. I do have many years under my belt and I have taken the cheap way out too many times. I always got burned in the end. Maybe I saved a few $$ in the short run, but I have paid in the long run. Experience!! These days I pay close to top dollar for top of the line products. I am much better off in the long run. If I was you I would get a reman tranny from a good local shop. These trannys are not rocket science, but a few of the tricks are close. Good Luck Waltalpine!

I know this should go without saying but,replace the converter too.Also if the fluid was that bad I wouldnt allow them to use any part of the original in the build process.Very few shops have the equipment needed to clean a case that was that nasty.If I wasnt getting a built trans,I think I'd get a ford reman,at least the warranty would be nationwide.

edit) replace the converter with a NEW one,not a reman.

Another inexpensive way to ensure that particles dont get into your new trans is to install an inline filter at the rad cooler.Ive been useing one since my truck was new and have never had any sludge film in the pan.I use a WIX from NAPA.
